Information and communication technologies and big data will result in significant shifts in and around the agricultural sector and the entire food supply chain. In the digital age, agriculture can be made more sustainable by taking into account innovative cultivation methods in combination with a diversity of crops and livestock farming as well as the relevant markets and policies.
Environmentally sound dietary habits (food production, consumption and trade) are achievable but would require a fundamental change in attitudes and policies. This is the conclusion of a recent report issued by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report assesses the current state of the European food system with regard to the objectives of food security, ecosystem health and social and economic prosperity.
